Energy Demand Challenges in Europe :Implications for policy, planning and practice
This open access book examines the role of citizens in sustainable energy transitions across Europe. It explores energy problem framing, policy approaches and practical responses to the challenge of securing clean, affordable and sustainable energy for all citizens, focusing on households as the main unit of analysis. The book revolves around ten contributions that each summarise national trends, socio-material characteristics, and policy responses to contemporary energy issues affecting householders in different countries, and provides good practice examples for designing and implementing sustainable energy initiatives. Prominent concerns include reducing carbon emissions, energy poverty, sustainable consumption, governance, practices, innovations and sustainable lifestyles. The opening and closing contributions consider European level energy policy, dominant and alternative problem framings and similarities and differences between European countries in relation to reducing household energy use. Frances Fahy is Professor of Geography at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Frances is an environmental geographer and she has published more than > 75 publications including three edited volumes (published by Sage, 2013, Routledge, 2014, Palgrave 2019) and numerous peer reviewed articles in journals such as Global Environmental Change, Area, Energy Policy, and Journal of Consumer Policy. Prof Fahy has coordinated > 16 funded research projects and is the coordinator and lead of the Horizon 2020 project, ENERGISE ‘European Network for Research, Good Practice and Innovation for Sustainable Energy’. She is currently leading nine other partners across Europe on this 3.7 million Euro social science research project which aims to provide an understanding of the factors driving individual and collective energy choices and practices across Europe. Prof Fahy won the President’s Award for Research Excellence Established Researcher (Senior Lecturers/Professors) in 2017 and was recognised by Enterprise Ireland at the EU Research Forum in Dublin in June 2017, as a Champion of EU Research 2017. In Spring 2018, Frances was the recipient of the University's inaugural President's Award for Societal Impact. Prof Fahy previously served as Head of Geography at NUI Galway (2014-2017) and led the Socio-Economic and Policy Pillar of the Ryan Institute and the Environment Development and Sustainability Cluster (Whitaker Institute) from 2013 until 2018. Frances is the past President of the Geographical Society of Ireland (2012-2014) and a past Chair of the Planning and Environment Research Group (PERG) of the Royal Geographical Society (2007-2012). Frances was the recipient of the 2013-14 Fulbright Scholar Award and travelled to the US to conduct research on: Communicating Sustainability Research – Challenges, Opportunities and Dissemination Strategies. In addition, Frances held visiting Fellowships and international appointments in the School of People, Environment and Planning, Massey University, Palmerston North Campus, New Zealand; School of Environmental Sciences, University of Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand; and the Centre for Sustainability: Agriculture, Food, Energy, Environment (CSAFE), Discipline of Geography, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. Prof Fahy was elected to the Board of the European Roundtable on Sustainable Production and Consumption in 2017, and is currently the Honorary Secretary (2018-). Prof Fahy is a founding member of the Sustainability Initiative on campus she co-organised the launch of the University’s Sustainability Strategy in November 2017. As a leader of the Research and Teaching Pillar within the Community University Sustainability Project (CUSP) she actively involved in a programme of work to ensure the implementation of that Strategy through until 2020 (see: www.nuigalway.ie/sustainability). Prof Fahy was Co-Chair of the 2019 EUGEO Conference (held in May 2019, in NUI Galway) and the Vice-Chair for the International Geographical Union Congress 2024 ‘Bridging a World of Difference’ and will host over 3,000 Geographers in Ireland in 2024. Prof Fahy has supervised nine recent and current PhD students, seven Postdoctoral Research Fellows, and numerous Masters students. Many of her graduates now hold key roles in policy and academia. Gary Goggins is Research Project Coordinator with the ENERGISE project and is based in the School of Geography at NUI Galway. He holds a PhD in Environmental Sociology and Sustainability Studies, an MA in Community Development and an undergraduate degree in Business Studies. His main research interests are in relation to sustainable consumption and individual and socio-material influences on consumption patterns. He is also concerned with how knowledge is communicated with policy makers, civil society and industry. For several years, he worked as a project manager with a family construction business and has first-hand experience of producing energy efficient buildings to high regulatory standards. He has also worked in the NGO sector in Ireland and Zambia, where he was responsible for developing and implementing a number of sustainable community-led projects. In a previous life, he travelled extensively with a preference for visiting developing countries. These days, he is contented with life on the West coast of Ireland, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
