Managing Innovation and Standards :A Case in the European Heating Industry
This book provides an in-depth study of the management of standards and regulation in sustainable and radical innovation development. It considers the case of micro Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) technology. The developers of this radical innovation in the European heating sector encountered major conflicts when attempting to create or adapt standards when bringing the technology to market. Utilising rich research data and interviews with key actors, the author uses this case to derive a grounded theory on the management of standards and regulation during an innovation process. The results also have important implications for innovators, which are reflected in clear advice for practice. This book provides an in-depth study of the management of standards and regulation in sustainable and radical innovation development. Dr. Paul Wiegmann is an assistant professor in the ITEM group of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences. His work is motivated by the observation that addressing major societal and economic trends (e.g. making things ‘smart’ and sustainable) is beyond the reach of individual organisations. Paul’s PhD research (thesis title: “Setting the Stage for Innovation: Balancing Diverse Interests Through Standardisation”) focused on the functions of standardisation in this context. Building on this expertise, Paul’s current research investigates how standards fit among other explicit and implicit rules that govern ‘innovation ecosystems’. In particular, he aims to identify under which conditions these rules can support value creation and value capture in ecosystems. Paul uses both qualitative (case studies, grounded theory) and quantitative (choice experiments, conjoint analysis) methods. His teaching and thesis supervision focus on topics related to standardisation, and to qualitative research methods. Academic background Paul holds a PhD from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, and further degrees from Erasmus University and the University of Warwick. He was a visiting researcher at TU Berlin (2014 & 2015) and at Yonsei University, Seoul (2018). Paul also acts as treasurer for the European Academy of Standardisation (EURAS).
