Paul T. Finger(editor)

Professor Paul T. Finger, M.D. is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is fellowship trained in ocular tumor, orbital disease and ophthalmic radiation therapy. Dr. Finger has over 33 years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in, around and behind the eye. In order to make the diagnosis, Dr. Finger uses the latest diagnostic imaging and ultrasound techniques. In fact, he has researched and developed many of the diagnostic techniques now employed around the world. These include unique applications of: high frequency anterior segment ultrasound ("ultrasonic biomicroscopy," or UBM), OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), digital imaging and super small incision aspiration biopsy techniques. The most common primary intraocular cancer is melanoma. It is often called "choroidal melanoma." Dr. Finger offers the most sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic options available, including brachytherapy (radioactive material sealed in titanium seeds or orbital catheters placed directly into or near a tumor). For this purpose, Dr. Finger was the first to use of palladium-103 seeds in ophthalmic plaque, which has proven to offer better eye and vision sparing than either iodine-125 or ruthenium-106 (in most cases). See his results on http://eyecancer.com.(https://eyecancer.com/our-approach/doctor-reported-outcomes/) Dr. Finger believes in excellence through innovation. Never satisfied with less effective methods, he invented Finger's Slotted Eye Plaques to preserve eyes and vision for patients whose choroidal melanoma is near, touching or wrapped around the optic nerve and numerous other techniques described on his website http://eyecancer.com. Dr. Finger has published more than 300 articles, 40 book chapters and performed nearly a thousand scientific reviews. He was twice asked to write the eye cancer, choroidal melanoma chapter for the medical oncology textbook "DeVita" as well as all the chapters for the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). Dr. Finger has been asked to Chair both national and international committees. As sole ophthalmic oncologist, he has been asked to help improve radiation therapy guidelines and develop a standards for eye plaque dosimetry and quality assurance. As Chair of the Ophthalmic Oncology Task Force of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), he worked with over 50 eye cancer specialists from 18 countries to make universal staging and a common scientific language a reality.Professor Paul T.
